Egypt’s unemployment rate falls to 8.1%: CAPMAS

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced Wednesday that Egypt’s unemployment rate in the first quarter of this year fell to 8.1 percent of the total labor force, compared to 8.9 percent in the last quarter of 2018.

According to CAPMAS, the volume of labor force in Egypt during the first quarter of this year recorded 27.96 million; the labor force of males recorded 22.925 million while females recorded 5.43 million.

The number of unemployed in the first quarter of this year amounted to 2.267 million. The number of unemployed males recorded 1.315 million, while females recorded 952,000 with a decrease of 224,000 compared to the fourth quarter of 2018, and a decrease of 827,000 compared to the first quarter of 2018.

According to the statement, the unemployment rate among males was 5.7 percent and among females 18.9 percent.

CAPMAS reported that 67.4 percent of the unemployed were in the age group 15-29 years old in the first quarter of 2019, compared to 78.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018.

“Urban unemployment rate fell to 9.8 percent of the total urban labor force in the first quarter of this year, compared to 10.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018 and 12.1 percent in the same quarter of 2018,” the agency said.

“Rural unemployment rate fell to 6.9 percent, compared to 7.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018 and 9.5 percent in the same quarter of 2018,” it added.
