ElBaradei renews calls for timeline for power handover

Presidential hopeful Mohamed ElBaradei on Sunday renewed calls for a road map for the current transitional period of military rule in Egypt.

“On course 2 stability Libya & Tunisia developed road map with timeline 4 transitional period; 7 months after revolution, what R we waiting 4?” ElBaradei tweeted.

Libya's National Transitional Council on Saturday said that a constituent assembly will be set up within eight months and that both parliamentary and presidential elections will be held within 20 months.

Meanwhile, Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has said the Interim Constitution issued in March ensures a time-lined, smooth transfer of power.

Several Egyptian opposition figures however do not see that document as a sufficient guarantee for a handover of power to a civilian government, because it does not specify dates for elections.

After the ouster Hosni Mubarak on 11 February, the SCAF said it would only stay in power for an interim period of six months, during which elections would be conducted.

Observers believe the transfer of power to a civilian president will only be accomplished in 2012.
