Foreign minister visits Russia Thursday

Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr departed for Moscow Thursday for a one-day visit to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and discuss bilateral relations and the Syrian conflict.

Amr's visit is part of a push to strengthen relations between the two countries and continue consultations on international and regional developments, particularly in Syria, the Turkish state Anadolu news agency reported.

Russia and China, two of the Syrian government's few remaining allies, have blocked United Nations resolutions against President Bashar al-Assad's administration that would help pave the way for stronger international action on the conflict.

Lavrov visited Egypt last month as part of a Middle East tour and invited President Mohamed Morsy to visit Russia.
