Freedom and Justice Party looks for presidential candidate

The Muslim Brotherhood affiliated Freedom and Justice Party on Sunday announced the start of discussions with political parties to select a candidate for presidential elections set for end of this year.

Al-Ahram website quoted the party chief deputy Essam al-Erian as saying the party is committed to the Brotherhood’s decision of not putting forward a candidate for presidency.

Erian also added that the Democratic Alliance for Egypt, which includes around 28 political parties, started discussions on selecting a candidate as well as methods for obtaining a majority in parliament.

Asked if the Freedom and Justice Party’s candidate could be affiliated with the Brotherhood, Erian said “I don’t think so.”

“We’re looking for a consensus candidate. These discussions are still in the beginning.”

Wafd, Ghad, Tagammu, Nasserite, Noor, Development and Reform, Egyptian Arab Socialist, and Labor parties and the Popular Coalition are members of the Democratic Alliance for Egypt.
