Germany to create committee to support Egyptian democracy

Germany will form a committee to support Egypt after the 25 January revolution, the German foreign minister announced Tuesday during a visit to Egypt.

The committee will aim to help Egypt achieve complete democracy during the interim period, as well as boost cooperation with political parties and media channels.`

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle announced the committee's formation during a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf. The visit is Westerwelle's second since the revolution.

Sharaf’s media adviser Ahmed al-Semman said Westerwelle had expressed his country’s readiness to support democracy in Egypt, taking advantage of Germany's experience with reunification.

The German minister said an economic delegation will visit Egypt soon to explore investment opportunities in Egypt. He added that Germany will use its powers as a European Union member to encourage European investments in Egypt.

Westerwelle commended measures taken by the Egyptian government to fight corruption and assured that they will help attract foreign and German investments in Egypt.
