Government considers doing away with gas subsidies

The government is reconsidering its policy of subsidizing petroleum products, said Petroleum Minister Abdullah Ghorab.

Butane gas in Egypt is sold for 25 percent less than its average price in global markets.

The minister also said the government is inclined to cancel subsidies of natural gas for industrial purposes and increase export prices.

“We aim to achieve social justice and maintain affordable prices for basic commodities,” he said.
