Government denies rumors of Interior Minister’s resignation

The Egyptian government on Wednesday denied rumors that Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy resigned from his post following clashes between security forces and protesters in downtown Cairo on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The violence, which took place mostly in the streets between Tahrir Square and the Interior Ministry, resulted in the injury of over a thousand people, according to the Ministry of Health.

The prime minister's media advisor, Ahmed Samman, said that Essawy is working at his office to ensure that calm and stability are restored on the streets.

Samman went on to say that the rumor of Essawy’s resignation is aimed at creating confusion among the public and negatively impacting the police’s ability to confront criminals.

On Wednesday, presidential hopeful Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh demanded Essawy’s resignation, saying he had "failed to maintain security and caused the spread of thuggery.”

He added that the way in which police forces violently attacked family members of those protesters who had been killed was unacceptable.
