Govt: Implementation of roadmap accelerates Egypt’s readmission to the African Union

Cabinet’s spokesperson Hossam al-Qawish said on Thursday evening that the implementation of Egypt's political roadmap would accelerate its readmission to the African Union.

The spokesman added in a statement on the sidelines of the prime minister's visit to Equatorial Guinea that Africa knows the positive developments in Egypt with the imminent presidential elections. “The visit supports this positive attitude,” he said.

Egypt's membership in the African Union was suspended when the military ousted the first democratically-elected president Mohamed Morsy on 3 July. Since then, Egypt has promised the roadmap set forth will ensure the country returns to the democratic path.

The delegation met in April with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, expressing confidence that the events were not a ‘military coup but people’s uprising,’ according to what was announced by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Badr Abdel Aaty.
