Libyan rebel rep: Qadhafi tried to get Al-Azhar to condemn NATO

A delegation sent by Libyan President Muammar Qadhafi attempted to persuade Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb of Cairo's Al-Azhar University to condemn NATO attacks against the Libyan regime and to issue a fatwa against them, according to the rebel National Transitional Council's representative in Cairo, Abdel Moneim al-Honi.

Honi on Monday accused Qadhafi loyalists in Cairo of preparing a media campaign to tarnish the image of Libya's revolutionaries and improve their leader's public image in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Honi, who previously served as Libya's permanent representative to the Arab League before joining the rebel movement, explained that Qadhafi is spending millions of dollars on the media campaign.

"When I learned of the Qadhafi delegation’s visit to Al-Azhar, I quickly contacted [al-Tayyeb] and explained to him what is really going on in Libya,” he explained.
