Poll projects 74% of Egyptians will vote for the constitution

A recent poll conducted by the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (Baseera) found that 92 percent of Egyptians are aware of the referendum on the Constitution, 76 percent said they would participate in it and 74 percent said they would vote yes.
 
The poll was conducted from 24 to 26 December last year on a sample of 2,068 citizens 18 years and older in all governorates.
 
Baseera General Manager Maged Osman said out of the 8 percent of citizens were not aware of the referendum, 14 percent are from Upper Egypt, 12 percent are from rural areas, 7 percent in the Delta and 3 percent are from urban governorates.
 
According to the poll, 32 percent of those polled in Upper Egypt and 21 percent in the Delta did not know about the upcoming referendum.
 
One-third of the respondents in the age group of 18 to 29 years did not know about the referendum, compared to 17 percent in the age group of 50 years and older.
 
Eighty-one percent of the 50 and above age group said they would cast their votes, compared to 70 percent of the group of 18 to 29 years.
 
Osman said of those who do not intend to participate, 22 percent would not participate for personal reasons, 13 percent do not feel that their votes would make a difference, 11 percent are not involved in any political activity and 9 percent do not approve of the Constitution.
 
The poll showed that 57 percent believe the referendum would be fair, 5 percent believe it would be fair if secured by the army and supervised by the judiciary, away from the Brotherhood, 12 percent believe it would not be fair and 27 percent do not know.
 
Osman noted that 59 percent did not yet read the Constitution, 36 percent read some parts and 5 percent read it all.
