Presidency rejects German request to visit Morsy

The Egyptian presidency received a request from German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle to visit ousted President Mohamed Morsy. The presidency told the German Foreign Ministry that Morsy is currently “subject to legal interrogation.”

It added that he also faces several charges and that the matter is in the hands of the judiciary.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the presidency said that Egyptian authorities approved requests by Egyptian, Arab, European, and African rights organisations to visit Morsy, who declined to receive some Egyptian rights representatives but agreed to see Catherine Ashton, the European Union foreign policy chief, and a delegation from the African Union.

The statement also said that all who met the deposed President have said that they support the transition in Egypt, the roadmap, and the interim president and his cabinet. They also emphasized that they reject the terrorist attacks in Sinai and elsewhere, as well as acts intended to paralyse daily life.
