Protest staged near Holy Mosque against Saudi police attack on Egyptian citizen

Social media users circulated a video showing Egyptians shouting at another group of Egyptians near the Holy Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, chanting  “Raise your head up, you are Egyptian,” in protest to an attack by Saudi police against an Egyptian the day before.

The attack, which took place outside Al-Shohadaa hotel located 150 meters away from the Holy Mosque, was circulated all over the internet.

On Saturday, a video showed an unidentified Egyptian citizen with severe wounds from a brutal police attack in which he was beaten and insulted.

Hundreds of Egyptians protested the attack near the Holy Mosque calling on the Egyptian government and President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to intervene in order to restore Egyptian dignity.

Eyewitnesses, according to websites, said the incident occurred when an Egyptian parked his car outside a restaurant to pick up food while his brother waited in the car. A Saudi policeman approached him and asked him to immediately move. The Egyptian said they would leave soon after picking up their food. The policeman then slapped him on the face, dragged him out of the car and continued to beat and insult him.

The Egyptians called on passers-by for help. In few minutes, a huge number of Egyptians gathered and protested.
