Run-offs update: Locals storm Daqahliya polling station to protest vote rigging

Residents of Daqahliya's Sandeela district stormed a local polling station on Sunday to protest alleged vote rigging in favor of ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) candidates Noshi al-Basandeeli, who is competing for the workers' seat, and Magdi Arafa, who is competing for the professionals' seat.

After breaking into the polling station, residents smashed 17 ballot boxes, tearing up ballots and throwing them into the street.

“When we arrived at the polling station, we were surprised to find that votes had been rigged in favor of al-Basandeeli and Arafa, so we smashed the ballot boxes and tore up the fake ballots," one district resident told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

“When we opened the envelopes to sort the ballots, we were surprised to find that more than 75 percent of them had been fixed in favor of NDP candidates," said Hiss Saad, chairman of the Abu Jalal Preparatory School polling station. "So we reported the incident to the authorities."

The state-run High Elections Commission was soon notified and voting at the polling station was suspended.
