Security sources: Sudan’s Bashir won’t be arrested during Cairo visit

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir will not be arrested during his visit to Cairo, security sources at Cairo International Airport told Al-Masry Al-Youm Sunday.

The sources said that the Egyptian government would not give attention to Amnesty International’s request to arrest Bashir, for whom the International Criminal Court in March 2009 issued an arrest warrant over charges of committing crimes against humanity in Sudan’s Darfur region during an armed conflict that has left more than 300,000 dead since 2003.

Bashir arrived in Cairo Sunday afternoon for a two-day visit, during which he is scheduled to meet with President Mohamed Morsy to discuss the latest regional developments.

Sudan’s president was received at the airport by Prime Minister Hesham Qandil, Vice President Mahmoud Mekky and staff from the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo.
