Sharqiya police officers end sit-in

Low-ranking police officers who had been protesting outside the security directoriat in Sharqiya have ended their sit-in following Sharqiya Security Directorate Major General Magdy Abdel Ghaffar's promise to meet their demands by September 5, at the latest.

The protests in Sharqiya were led by police officers who have been disgruntled by delayed payments and have been demanding better pensions. The demonstration turned tense on Sunday as protesters stormed the province’s security department, preventing generals from entering the building.

The officers threatened a nationwide strike if their demands were not met by the deadline.

Assistant Interior Minister for Public Security Major General Kamal al-Daly and other police officials met with 50 police officers at the Sharqiya Security Directorate Sunday to solve the crisis.

Protests had halted work at the security department and five other police facilities.
