Two-hour truce between Hamas, Israel

Israel agreed to a two-hour humanitarian truce on Sunday in a neighborhood in the Gaza Strip hit hard by Israeli shelling, an Israeli military spokesman said.

The ceasefire, requested by the International Committee of the Red Cross, will last from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm (1030-1230 GMT) in the Shejaia district, where health officials said at least 50 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire.

Hamas said earlier that it would abide by the temporary truce. Spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri said that the movement agreed to a three-hour humanitarian truce proposed by the International Red Crescent.

“How could we be silent while we see the victims and injured of the Palestinian people?” he said. "The Arab stance is not good."

He also called for opening the Rafah border crossing for medical reasons.

Hamas had earlier refused Egypt's proposal for a truce between the movement and Israel, which has been carrying out military operations against Gaza for more than a week, in response to missiles fired from Gaza.

At least 300 Palestinians have been killed in the attacks.
