Update: Clashes renew in front of Semiramis

Protesters clashed with security forces outside the Semiramis Hotel on the Corniche on Monday evening.

After protesters hurled stones at the police, officers responded with a barrage of tear gas, causing respiratory difficulties for dozens of demonstrators.

Before heading to the Semiramis, the protesters had set a police truck on fire on the 6 October Bridge earlier in the evening.

Earlier on Monday, protesters set another police van on fire on the Corniche by the Qasr al-Nil Bridge. Unknown assailants had reportedly hurled stones at the vehicle, smashed its windows in with sticks and then set it ablaze, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The same individuals also allegedly threw rocks at cars attempting to cross the bridge, blocking traffic.

In nearby Tahrir Square, protesters clashed with security forces on Sunday when the police attempted to open the square to traffic. Dozens were injured, and at least two  police vehicles were torched in the incident.
