US senator calls for release of alleged Mossad spy in exchange for more aid

The US is undertaking diplomatic action to free Ilan Grapel, an American citizen accused of spying for Israel during the 25 January revolution, informed sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Grapel is currently being detained pending further investigations.

The same sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that US Senator Gary Ackerman called for the release of Grapel in exchange for more aid to Egypt.

Officials from the US Embassy visited Grapel on Thursday and his parents are scheduled to see him on Saturday.

Grapel, arrested three months ago, is charged with espionage in cooperation with another Israeli residing outside Egypt.

According to investigations, Grapel took photos of events that took place during the revolution and sent them to the Mossad. He also alleged to have sent information about the Egyptian armed Forces via the internet to Mossad officer.

An official from the US Embassy, meanwhile, said Grapel is a news reporter who works for several foreign newspapers.
