US think-tank to hold seminar on radicalization and Paris attack

A US-based think-tank is planning a discussion panel on radicalization in light of the 7 January deadly militant attack on a French magazine over cartoons deemed insulting to Prophet Mohamed.

The Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy will hold the event on 22 January at the National Press Club in Washington DC, titled “Muslim Response to Charlie Hebdo: Understanding the Root Causes of Radicalization.”

Speakers at the conference will include Nihad Awad, Executive Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations, and Dalia Mogahed, The Director of Research at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding.

Fears of a new wave of Islamophobia have surged after the Paris attack on weekly Charlie Hebdo that killed 12, mainly editors and cartoonists.

The magazine had been famous for its scathing satirical cartoons of Prophet Mohamed.

“This forum is designed to go beyond condemnations and Islamophobic rhetoric to explore the religious, societal and geopolitical dynamics underlying recent events, moving beyond the superficial binary of Muslim radicals vs. free speech,” a statement by the center said.
