Cairo Criminal Court on Thursday acquitted a police captain in the Cairo neighborhood of Marg accused of killing a protester during the 25 January uprising.

The Public Prosecution had referred Captain Mohamed Ahmed al-Seesy to criminal court on charges of killing Mohamed Omar Abdel Halim on 28 January 2011, which has come to be known as the "Friday of Anger."

Seesy's lawyer had claimed he was not at the police station on the day in question.

According to Health Ministry figures, some 850 protesters were killed and 6,000 injured from excessive force used by the police against protesters during the 18-day uprising.
