President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday met with his Eritrean counterpart, Isaias Afwerki, in Cairo to discuss African and Middle Eastern issues and bilateral relations.

No other officials were present, sources close to the president told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Afwerki last visited Egypt in May.

The meeting comes amid deteriorating relations between Mubarak and Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, a result of Zenawi's recent accusation claiming Egypt backs Ethiopian insurgents.

Differences over Nile-sharing also contribute to the souring of ties.

Afwerki will meet with other Egyptian officials as well as secretary-general for the Arab League Amr Moussa.
