Interior Ministry denies torture, ill-treatment of detainees

The Interior Ministry denied Tuesday news reports about the torture or ill-treatment of detainees in prisons.

"The Interior Ministry stresses that what news websites, programs and media outlets circulate about complaints by detainees pending investigation over torture or ill-treatment is a void claim," the statement read.

The Ministry is ready to receive any complaint from any prisoner and take decisive action against violators, the statement added.

Many human rights organizations have visited prisons and checked on aspects of care provided to them, said the statement.

It added the Ministry responds to the remarks made by prisoners, the last of which was the transfer of a number of prisoners to different prisons to ease the suffering of their families who visit them.

"The Ministry reaffirms that it welcomes any request from any human rights organization, whether official or NGO, to visit the Egyptian prisons and verify the reality of the situation there," the statement read.

"The Ministry calls on media…to verify such claims, before circulating them, through the Ministry's concerned departments," the statement said.
