State-run news agency MENA reported on Sunday that an Egyptian Central Security Forces officer in North Sinai Governorate was injured while attempting to stop a group of Africans trying to illegally cross the border into Israel.

The officer, Ahmed Abdel Fattah, was shot in his left leg. He has been transferred to a nearby hospital.

Security forces in charge of monitoring the border noticed a group of Africans heading towards the Israeli side. When security forces tried to stop the group, they opened fire, according to MENA.

Egyptian authorities complain about high rates of African infiltration into Israel, saying that they are aided by the local Bedouin community. Israel claims that around 10,000 Africans have illegally migrated through Egypt over the past few years.
