41 sentenced to year for pro-Morsi protests in Beni Suef

The Beni Suef Criminal Court sentenced 41 alleged supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi to one year in jail over staging unlicensed protests on Thursday.

Out of those defendants, 29 are still at large and three include three local Muslim Brotherhood leaders.

They were found guilty of assaulting police with fire bottles during a march in Nasr City.

Egypt has sentenced thousands of people of all political stripes to jail for breaking the protest law. The law, enacted late 2014, requires a security clearance from the Interior Ministry before staging protests, and imposes fines and jail terms for violators.
