54 Morsy loyalists referred to criminal court in Sharqiya over Jan riots

Prosecutors in Zagazig, Sharqiya referred 54 supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsy on Monday to criminal trial over charges of involvement in riots that coincided with the referendum on the country’s constitution in January.

Egypt voted on a new constitution in January following the ouster of Morsy by the Armed Forces in 2013 amid popular protests against his rule. Morsy supporters, arrested and prosecuted in the thousands by the interim authorities, believe the vote was illegitimate and maintain that Morsy’s ouster was a military coup.

Zagazig prosecutors accuse Morsy loyalists of joining a terrorist group, violating protest laws, disrupting public security, possessing fireworks, sabotaging private and public property, instigating violence against police and army forces and attempting to impede the referendum.
