Poor results for left-wing parties in the elections

The left-wing Socialist Party and People's Alliance Party did not win a single seat in the parliamentary elections, while the left-wing Tagammu Party is fielding four candidates and the Communist Party one candidate in the runoffs.

Mohamed Farag of the Tagammu Party said only four out of its 13 candidates made it to the runoffs. “Atef Meghawry, the vice president of the party, did not make it,” he said.

Ahmed Shaaban, president of the Socialist Party, said the next parliament will not truly represent the people. “The votes were bought by businessmen,” he said. “And the High Elections Committee let them exceed the financial campaigning limit.”

“Capital will rule and social conflicts will erupt,” he added.

Medhat al-Zahid, vice president of the People's Alliance Party, said Mubarak’s men have won and democratic forces have been marginalized in order to have a parliament made up of one voice.
