Berlin travel show ‘of paramount importance’ to Egypt: tourism minister

Egypt's participation in the ITB Berlin Travel Trade Show is of paramount importance as it is considered the most important tourist convention in the world, said Egypt's Tourism Minister Hesham Zaazou in a statement Wednesday.

Zaazou attended the convention in Berlin held March 8-12 as leader of Egypt's delegation, seeking to generate business for Egypt's languishing tourism sector.

The German Minister of the Interior Karl Ernst Thomas de Maizière is expected to visit Egypt soon, said Zaazou, adding that Maizière will check the strengthened security measures at Egyptian airports during his visit.

In addition, a German delegation will visit the Red Sea in the period between March 10-13 to inspect the security measures taken in the Red Sea, Zaazou added, pointing out that the Egyptian state has disbursed LE250,000,000 to tighten security measures in the touristic governorates including the Red Sea.

"We will sign agreements with [Germany] promoting tourism to Egypt," he said, adding that Egypt plans to release a new advertising campaign on German television, internet and in streets and main squares throughout the country. Promotional programs will also be launched, including low-cost airline tickets. The tourism minister also said he would use the recent archaeological discoveries in Egypt in promotional campaigns scheduled for April.

Zaazou stressed that his meeting with the President of the German Business Aviation Association was essential in Egypt's efforts to source tourism from Germany.
