Lawyer calls for referendum on whether to pardon Mubarak

An Egyptian lawyer has filed a lawsuit to push for a popular referendum on whether former president Hosni Mubarak should be pardoned.

Lawyer Nabih al-Bahei suggested that Mubarak and his family, if indicted, relinquish their assets and receive a pardon.

Mubarak is currently detained at a Sharm el-Sheikh hospital pending investigations into charges of corruption and involvement in killing protesters during the 25 January revolution.

The Illicit Gains Authority had released former first lady Suzanne Mubarak after she gave her Egyptian assets to the state.

In his lawsuit, Bahei said only the Egyptian people have the right to decide on the fate of the Mubaraks.

The president’s two sons, Alaa and Gamal, are imprisoned over charges of illegally acquiring public money.
