Salafi MP demands porn website ban

A parliamentarian representing the Salafi-oriented Nour Party, Youness Makhyoun, called on Monday for banning porn websites in Egypt, the party’s official Facebook page said.

The party said Makhyoun submitted an information request on the subject to People’s Assembly Speaker Saad al-Katatny on Monday.

The State Council Administrative Court in May 2009 decreed that the government should ban porn websites.

The court said such websites help spread vice, which destroys traditions, beliefs and morals, and therefore the country’s interests as well as social and national security.

But Tarek Kamel, former communications minister, said it was impossible to ban porn websites as control over them comes from the family, youth awareness and religious teachings.

Nour Party members on 8 February called for setting regulations to control media content before and after publishing.

Several Facebook pages have recently been created for the same purpose. Fans of one page created last February, called “We want to ban porn websites in Egypt,” garnered more than 43,000 fans.

“We demand the Egyptian government and the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces ban such websites, which destroy Egypt’s youth as well as their morals, as many Arab and foreign countries have done,” the page said.
