President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Wednesday he does not recognize the term “regime change,” stressing that he rejects cyclical government changes.
“There is nothing called the regime. There is Egypt: the Egyptian state. Egyptians elect and a president rules a sound state; not a regime changing frequently,” Sisi said at the inauguration of a new departure lounge at the Hurghada Airport.
“No one can come [rule] against the will of Egyptians,” Sisi added.
Sisi, a former defense minister, ousted his elected predecessor Mohamed Morsy in 2013 following mass protests against the Muslim Brotherhood-led administration.
While Morsy loyalists dub his ouster as a military coup, Sisi backers view the change as a popular revolution backed by the army.
