Suez Canal head: Canal perfectly secure for navigation

The head of the Suez Canal Authority said the Canal is secure and navigation is normal, hours before the deadline set by the Armed Forces for the resolution of the current political standoff expires.

The ultimatum ends at 5PM this afternoon, after which the army is expected to impose its own roadmap for the future of the country. Egypt's first elected President has rejected the army's grace period.

Mohab Memesh, head of the Suez Canal Authority, said the number of ships using the canal and the cargo transported remained at normal levels.

Memesh commended the role of the Armed Forces in securing the Suez Canal.

The statement said 47 ships crossed the canal on Tuesday in both directions, carrying loads totaling 2.6 million tons.

He added that the canal has sent letters to international navigation companies to reassure them that the canal is perfectly secure.
