Wafd Party members demand party head resignation

A group of young, leading Wafd Party members held a press conference on Wednesday in front of the shrine of Saad Zaghloul (the party founder) to demand al-Sayed al-Badawy resign from his position as party head. They called for a presidential council to manage the party until the election of a new president.

The Wafd protesters said they established a movement under the title, “Wafd Tamarod.”

The protesters based their demands on “the inconsistent policies and decisions of the party head and [the party head] not being committed to the party's principles, which he runs in an individual way.”

They also demanded that the Wafd newspaper become an Egyptian joint stock company so all Egyptians could support it.

They gave Badawy a deadline until next Tuesday to achieve their demands, or they would start a sit-in at the party's headquarters the day after on Wednesday.

The press conference participants included Sami Balah, a member of the supreme body of the party, and Hassan Shaban, assistant to the party head..
