Foreign Minister: Relationship with Washington moving in right direction

Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said that Egyptian-American relations have been “turbulent” in recent months, but have now started to move in the right direction.

In a Facebook post, Fahmy denied that this was in reaction to his visits to Russia and China. “Those visits were to assert the independence of our decision,” he said. “We like to diversify our options.”

He added that relations have been getting better; especially after US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Egypt recently.

He also said that the desired levels of cooperation have not been reached yet.

Human rights groups were critical of Kerry's visit as he failed to press the interim government on what they accused of being politically-motivated arrests of the Brotherhood, which was the largest opposition party challenging the military establishment.
