Military prosecution blames businessman for recent Tahrir violence

The military prosecution on Sunday decided to detain Ibrahim Kamel, a leading National Democratic Party (NDP) member and businessman for 15 days pending investigations for having deliberately caused the clashes that erupted early Saturday between protesters and the armed forces.

After the military stormed the square to disperse protesters who have been calling for Mubarak and his family to be tried in court, bloody clashes ensued, leaving three killed and at least 71 injured.

The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) posted on its official Facebook page that preliminary investigations proved Kamel’s involvement. Ibrahim Kamel is a close friend of ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his son Gamal.

The military council charged Kamel with sparking chaos and a counter-revolution in order to halt trial of former NDP figures.

The British Sky News broadcast a video which said that Kamel had urged a counter-revolution.

Kamel, who was arrested late Saturday, was summoned by the prosecution in March on charges of involvement in assaulting protesters on 2 February. However, Kamel was released for lack of evidence.
