The judge leading investigations into Alaa and Gamal Mubarak's alleged illegal land purchase ordered the two sons of the former president detained for 15 days pending further inquiries.
The two men are already in custody in Tora prison on charges in a separate financial corruption case.
Judge Osama al-Saeedy on Thursday charged them with profiteering and the illegal acquisition of public funds during a 10-hour interrogation that began Wednesday evening. They are accused of purchasing land at unreasonably low prices from then-Civil Aviation Minister Ahmed Shafiq that belonged to the Cooperative Housing Association for Military Pilots.
Shafiq, who also served as prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, is also under investigation over the sale.
The investigation began after former MP Essam Sultan filed a complaint accusing Shafiq of selling 40,238 square meters of land to Alaa and Gamal Mubarak in 1993, when he was serving as head of the Pilot’s Association. Sultan alleged Shafiq sold the land at more than eight time less than its actual value.
