Democratic Current: Interior Ministry excesses threaten the Constitution

The Democratic Current has asked President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to intervene and protect the state from police excesses which threaten the constitution.

The Current, which includes The Constitution Party, The Karama Party, The Popular Alliance Party, The Justice Party, The Egypt Freedom Party and The Popular Current, said in a statement on Sunday that police excesses have increased so drastically that they may shake the citizens' image of their own country.

The statement called for the National Council for Human Rights to follow up on such excesses, particularly torture and forced disappearance, and bring those responsible for them to justice.

It said the prestige of the Interior Ministry is achieved by a respect for the law and not by an excessive use of force, adding that the ministry needs to be restructured.

It added that articles 53 and 63 of the Constitution prohibit all forms of torture and forced disappearance.
